How to prepare for recording

The quality of a musical production does not begin when the record button is pressed, but days earlier during the artist's preparation. An optimized session reduces stress, saves costs, and allows the engineer to focus on creativity rather than solving avoidable technical issues.

The importance of vocal preparation

For any singer or voice actor, the body is the instrument. Arriving at the studio without a proper warm-up not only affects pitch and breath control but can lead to premature vocal cord fatigue. In the humid climate of Valencia, maintaining constant hydration is essential, avoiding extremely cold or hot drinks immediately before the session.

We recommend dedicating at least 30 minutes to vocal warm-ups with resonance exercises and glissandos. If the session is intensive, it is advisable to schedule breaks every 90 minutes to prevent wear and tear. Remember that in our Vocal Recording service, we provide an acoustically controlled environment that captures the subtlest nuances, meaning any physical tension will be evident in the final track.

Repertoire planning and structure

Studio time is a finite resource. To maximize efficiency, it is imperative to arrive with a clear roadmap. This includes having lyrics printed or on a tablet (avoid using mobile phones that can generate electromagnetic interference near tube microphones) and knowing exactly the structure of each song: intros, choruses, bridges, and outros.

If you plan to record multiple takes for later "comping," define beforehand how many passes you need. A common mistake is improvising the structure on the spot, which consumes valuable session minutes and can negatively impact the artist's energy and flow.

Technical preparation of files

To ensure immediate integration into the recording session, accompanying files (backing tracks or instrumentals) must meet certain technical standards. The file should be in WAV format, preferably at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz and 24-bit, to avoid conversion artifacts.

Ensure that the backing track is centered and does not have excessive limiting effects that could make headphone monitoring difficult. If the project is complex, sending a song map with exact timestamps for each section will help the recording technician organize the DAW session rapidly.

Diet and habits on recording day

What we consume directly affects mucus production and laryngeal tension. It is recommended to avoid dairy and chocolate before recording, as they tend to thicken saliva and can cause annoying noises during plosive consonants. Coffee, while helpful for waking up, can dry out the throat if consumed in excess.

In Valencia, enjoying a Mediterranean diet is common; we recommend light, water-rich meals before coming to Calle de Colom. Heavy digestion can limit diaphragmatic capacity, affecting the power and support of long notes.

Time management and punctuality

Arriving 10 or 15 minutes before the agreed time allows you to acclimate to the space and coordinate final details with the engineer. Please note that the session time begins at the reservation hour. A late arrival reduces effective recording time, which can lead to rushing that compromises artistic quality.

If you have questions about how to organize your hours to optimize your investment, we suggest reading our guide on session budget planning, where we explain how to distribute time between recording, editing, and mixing.

The workflow at Sticketzyra

Once in the studio, the process begins with a brief briefing. The technician will adjust the microphone gain according to your voice dynamics, and we will configure the monitor mix in your headphones so you feel comfortable and confident. Trust between the artist and the engineer is fundamental to achieving organic takes.

Remember that we have professional acoustic treatment designed to eliminate unwanted reflections, ensuring that the captured signal is pure and easy to process during the subsequent mixing stage.
